Vegan Cacao and Maple Smoothie

Move over coconut water, there’s a new, cool plant water kid on the block. I speak, of course, of maple water, which is popping up all over the place lately. Hell, if Vogue magazine can feature it, so can we…

I’ll be honest, maple water doesn’t taste of much really but that has its benefits. For a start, the subtle taste allows the other flavours in this Vegan Cacao and Maple Smoothie to shine. It’s also so packed full of nutrients – 46 in all – that it’s worth trying just for the boost. As well as being a good source of calcium, iron and manganese, it’s great for rehydrating after a workout too, making it the perfect smoothie for every fit foodie. You could substitute almond milk or coconut water but it’s worth finding some maple water if you can.

I whizzed this up in my fabulous Froothie and added some Beloved date nectar to the mix. The recipe uses a bit of the thick coconut milk from the top of the can. Use the rest in a curry or maybe make yourself some of our mind-bogglingly good Mexican Vegan Chilli Choc Pots.

Note: if cacao is a bit of stretch or not available where you are, you could substitute cocoa. You could also use coconut water if maple water isn’t on the radar near you.
