How to Exercise on a Morning (Even when you really don’t want to)

July 27, 2016 By Jayne Rodgers 7 Comments

Veggie Runners - Morning Routine

Find it hard to motivate yourself to run first thing on a morning? Believe me, you’re not alone. Even Paula Radcliffe has said there are times she’d rather stay in bed. It can be hard to drag yourself from slumber and face the day with your trainers on. It’s always worth it though. No matter how rough you feel as you reluctantly head out, you’ll be buzzing and full of life when you get back. Guaranteed. So, to help you start the day the ‘yay!’ way, here are our top tips to get you moving on a morning.

Tip 1 – Do Not Snooze!
The hardest part is getting your feet on the ground so roll out of bed the moment your alarm goes off. The longer you stay in bed, the more likely you are to talk yourself out of running The snooze button is your enemy. DO NOT, REPEAT DO NOT, SNOOZE. Once you’re upright, you’re on the way to a great run!

Tip 2 – Be Prepared
Lay your running gear out next to your bed before you go to sleep. Put every single bit of it, including bra, socks, the lot. That way, you can get ready when you’re still half asleep. Just pull your running gear on, even if you’re bleary eyed and yawning non-stop. You’ll be dressed in no time and good to go.

Tip 3 – Lay Your Breakfast Out Before You Go
It’s important to have a nutritious breakfast after you’ve been running so leave nothing to chance and lay out your breakfast things ready for your return. This means that you’ll get the nutrients you need inside you as soon as possible – i.e. when your body really needs them. Plus there’s the added bonus of knowing you have breakfast to look forward to when you get back!

Tip 4 – Don’t Faff Around
The very best way to enjoy a morning run is to get out of the door! Really, just get outside. Don’t fuss about your hair, check your phone or otherwise faff around. Just put one foot in front of the other and GO! No matter how weary you might feel, you’re guaranteed to feel great after your run. Get out there and enjoy it. And guess what, the more you do it and it becomes a part of your routine, the easier it becomes. How’s that for motivation?

Why not make an early run part of your approach to fitness this week? You’ll be glad you did.

Good advice, but when not faffing around (no 4), don’t forget your keys!!

My routine is a little different, leave the stuff on the landing so I don’t wake my wife up. My sleeping pattern is such that I’ll generally go out if I wake up early, but won’t set an alarm as I only average six hours or less, and don’t want to miss out on any.

Good idea about having the breakfast stuff ready. I generally make a protein shake and have some walnuts to munch on at least.

Great points, Peter – how frustrating would it be to be locked out first thing?!

Ooh, any special reason it’s walnuts? We love new nutritional advice!

I find if I just ignore the little voice in my head that’s saying “running stuff? Why are you putting running stuff on???” and just get ready really sneakily I can be out of the door before my brain realised what I’m actually doing

Haha, love it! Brains are not that smart first thing in the morning, are they? Mine’s certainly not…

    Guys! Thanks for this post.
You know, I am the worst person in the world on motivating myself on exercising. I need to, but I just can`t motivate myself too.
But yes… we just gotta get on going. After a few days of routine, it gets easier.
